I am crazy excited about starting this study with my small group. The book Fervent by Priscilla Shirer has quickly become one of the most influential books I have read to date. This book came my way when a friend of mine mailed it to me via amazon. She told me that Jesus LOVED me and that I needed to read this book. I was in a point in my life where I was just going through the motions. I read  my bible everyday, prayed, attended church and was even involved in a small group. Yet, everyday I felt like I was drowning and failing as a mother. Something was missing and I had no idea how to fix it. I was brought to tears when I received my book in the mail because in that moment I knew God saw me. I wasn’t lost among the numbers or forgotten about. I was seen by my Father in Heaven who loved me with such unconditional love that’s still hard for me to fathom. This will be my third time reading this book and every time I walk away with something new, My prayer for you as we walk through this study together is that you would discover God’s love  for you more deeply, discover His heart more passionately, experience His freedom, and pray FERVENTLY. So let’s get started!

This Means War

Priscilla Shirer opens the book with this quote from Lord of the Rings: The Twin Towers

Théoden: I will not risk open war.

Aragorn: Open War is upon you, whether you risk it or not.

I love that quote! I really enjoy Lord of the Rings so anytime you can mix prayer with a favorite movie, I get all the feels. On a more serious note, we are in a battle whether we realize or not. There is a very real enemy out there and let me tell you it is not your next door neighbor you can’t get along with.

For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies. but against

evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers

in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

So how can we win this war? PRAYER!!! Prayer moves the hand of God. Prayer taps into God’s almighty power..making impossible things POSSIBLE. Prayers resurrects those dead places in our spirit where hope was lost. Prayer is one of the most powerful gifts we have been given to use but is also one of the most under used. But why? If prayer is so powerful, why don’t more people pray? I will quote Priscilla herself on the subject of our enemy and prayer.

And if I were your enemy, that’s exactly what I’d want. I’d want to make you devalue the most potent weapons in your arsenal. I’d strategize against you, using carefully calculated methods to disorient and defeat you. In fact, this approach makes so much devilish sense that’s exactly what the devil  do- to you, in real life- all under the umbrella of deception.” -Priscilla Shirer

The good news is our war has already been won through the blood of Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross. We already have the victory and we can claim it  through the power of prayer!! Next week we will go over some of the areas the enemy attacks the most…against your passion, against your focus, against your identity just to name a few.
